While you are right about the labor structure (no unions in the UAE), the geographic location of Dubai is not as optimal as one would think.
Here is a really good study comparing LH and EK. It also points out the diversion necessary for travel between continents if connecting through Dubai. There are several grammar errors in it, however English was not the first language of the creator.
All that being said, I really hope I can score a J ticket to Europe (routed through DXB of course).
