I'm a glass-is-half-full kind of person, but I really don't see who benefits from the current process.
The only benefit to someone who isn't a 1K, is that: 1) the new process precludes 1Ks and First Class passengers from cutting in front of you if they missed their spot when called; and, 2) they get to walk on the blue carpet (apparently to drive sales of credit cards that offer priority boarding.... ). We as 1Ks, GS and first class ticket holders are left with a scrum....
