The other thing to consider is that people who've always had money and who live in stately piles or grand mansions (often with threadbare sofas, antique furniture etc) themselves are not so worried about whether the hotels they stay in are considered 'Luxury' or not - they would probably stay at a hotel such as Raffles or one of the other Grand Dames rather than a more modern place . A modern bathroom at a Holiday Inn might be considered luxurious to them
I was at a drinks party at my next door neighbours who are 'shooting, hunting and fishing' types. There were several obviously wealthy guests (at least 2 with titles) some of whom have villas in France etc - the conversation turned to holidays as one had just come back from Safari. I thought I'd ask if any of them had ever stayed in an Aman but of about eight people standing around in my group only one had heard of them
