Regardless of the thread title, it sounded to me like the OP found a tpac flight where the number of miles required to book it as an award ticket was greater than the number of miles needed to pay for it 100% with PWM. No SM earned either way, but saving miles by not treating it as an award.

I haven't spent any time trying to duplicate that yet.
