In those rare occasions when the box is the only alternative, I call in to say I forgot to drop them, I'm Fedexing them and they get the keys the next day.
I don't think that is a very solid idea, what if it's a weekend? What if it doesn't get into the right person's hands? What if they need to move the car for whatever reason before Fedex gets there the next day? They'll charge you, then once the Fedex arrives it'll be hell trying to get them to not charge you.
