100% leisure here. I let the fares dictate where I should go. Cheap fare to MCO? I spent three days there (of course, I then spent hundreds of dollars visiting Disney World and Universal Studios, but that's besides the point.) Cheap fare to LAX? Flew down for a day and drove up to the Mount Wilson Observatory and the site of the first McDonald's restaurant. Cheap fare to DCA? I went there five times in 2010 and visited pretty much everything listed as worth seeing on Wikitravel. DEN? MIA? ORD? You get the picture.
I also typically use one or two companion certificates each year.
This year was the first year I did any "pure" mileage runs, although none of them was on AS (I'll probably hit UA 1K on top of AS MVPG this year), and I've only done a couple. But mostly, I find a cheap fare to a place that holds at least some level of interest and go for at least a few days. I find that by doing so, I've seen some corners of the country that might not be on the top tourist destination lists but have left me with some of the best travel memories.
Also, last year and the year before, I qualified for MVPG (and 75K the year before) solely on AS metal. However, this year, I'm taking a couple of international trips to push me over the edge (oddly, I never had much of a desire to visit Japan, but I've got two trips to NRT scheduled--the first for 12 days with some family members and the second for three days on my own), and in previous years, I took advantage of some good Delta fares to some more random places like CLT and YYG. It depends on the year, but sometimes, AS files some competitive fares, and other years, AS just isn't offering anything close to the fares of its partner airlines, and it'll work out cheaper to shoot for the higher threshold of qualifying on partner miles.
