You may want to research the island of Con Dao. It is where the political prisoners are held, from the French colonial period through the Vietnam war era. It was a sobering experience for me to visit these prisons and imagine the hell that the prisoners must have gone through. In addition Con Dao has a nice beach, but do not expect any night life.
