You checked in online. After this time and up until airport check in opened, the staff at the airport would have checked the tech log for that particular aircraft (once it was confirmed that that specific tail was on its way to DEL), and moved you (and any other pax in similar defective seats) to the best alternative. The seat will then have been blocked but offered to a WTP pax as an op up. During the turnround in DEL, the local engineer would have likely gone out to the aircraft, and, if there was no other significant work required, may have attempted to fix some of the defective seats in the Tech Log. It's probable that the seat was fixed but as the local engineers are not allowed to clear 'operating deficiencies' from the log, it will have still have shown as being u/s to the airport team, but suitable for an op up or staff pax to occupy.
As you were booked separately to your wife, the airport staff wouldn't have known you were travelling with someone else.
In short, why always assume the worse? Why would the airport staff tell "lies"?
That's one of the most comprehensive answers from a non staff/crew member I think I've seen. ^
