Unhappy Westin Tokyo "early check in charge"?

Sometimes Japan just cracks me up. Flight landed Haneda waay early (4am), so I got to the Westin at 5. Went to check in, and the man at the front desk informs me that check-in time is normally 2pm and asks if it's OK if he charges an extra night. I wasn't sure I understood him correctly initially, but then he helpfully repeated himself. I explained to him that I've never been charged for checking in early, and didn't put in a Your24 request because last time I was told that if there's rooms available it's no problem checking in early, only bother with Your24 if you want to check in late and then check out late at the end of your stay. He then told me that they had high occupancy last night, and only had a few rooms open, and asked if I would be ok with a 50% charge. I'm not sure why that would matter to me if rooms are open... le sigh. After saying "no" enough times, and explaining that I stay here every month for a week at a time, he acquiesced. Not the most pleasant start to my stay...
