I used that, too. I'm recalling it as 2003, but maybe later. (I matched from AA.) There was a formal communication from AirTran rescinding the lifetime status and a new card sent to me.

Why? To get people who had demonstrated frequent flying on another carrier to try AirTran, rather than just lowering prices for everyone to attract new customers. At some point they figured they didn't need it (or at least to keep offering elite benefits) and yet by then everybody was in their promo database...
