I'm sure you were making an amusing or wry comment, but I think it stinks and shows disrespect for passengers. I do, though, remember a live announcement telling us on one occasion that BA had a crew member who spoke Spanish. All well and good, except that we were flying between LHR and ZRH. The Swiss say they have many national languages but Spanish is not one of them @:-) (and I did not notice a bunch of Spanish-speaking pax).

On shorthaul Airbuses, the sub-titles are as good as invisible anyway. My gripe is the prerecorded announcements which are non-specific on details and suggest that any questions should be directed at the crew. Then more often than desirable, the wrong announcement is made - e.g. after landing, hearing the equivalent of 'we will soon be landing, please fasten your seatbelts' does not inspire confidence. And despite valiant announcements from the flight deck explaining why pax can't exit (no pier, no steps, no bus etc), no such explanation is given to non-English-speaking pax.

Which raises the question: why bother with 'language' announcements?

Ah, well. Next is LCY-JFK. I don't remember pre-recorded 'language' announcements on that route.
