How do we know that they actually held coach seats? Did the OP see their boarding passes? I don't think this statement by the OP proves anything in this regard:

I was on SAN-DFW upgrade list, did got cleared. However, at the gate when they called up passengers for upgrades, two pilots received new boarding passes in First.
So do AA employees go ahead of EXPs for domestic upgrades?
