They're fine if you know what you're doing and do not need to check bags, don't forget your boarding pass (which can be printed 2 weeks in advance iirc) etc etc etc...

For sure and some destinations they are the only alternative.
The stress if you are not prepared can be tough (luggage size at the gate etc)
