Hi, I found out that you can 'activate' your Avios account for free by signing up a new member, and then 'linking' your accounts. I was previously an Air Miles collector but have not used my account for years. When trying use my old Air Miles to book a flight, I was told I could do this under the old scheme, but would have to pay airport taxes (as under the old scheme).

By simply getting a friend or family member to sign up for Avios, and then linking accounts together, your old account then become active.

This meant that I was then able to book a flight, and pay the new Avios fees (much cheaper than airport taxes).
