Spirit Airlines would not work for me because of all the gear I need to carry (two checked bags) one carryon under the seat and my briefcase in the overhead so the fees for me would be sky high.
Both flights were about half full. I had an aisle seat on the first flight and a window seat on the return. No one on either flight had to sit in a middle seat.

As for the fees, I was lucky in that I only needed a backpack for this trip. They don't charge for carry-ons under your seat, only if you have to put it in the overhead bin. But even if I had checked two bags (it would cost about $60) the total cost for the flights still would have still been about $100 less than the competition (considering I could check my bags for free on the competition).

And davewho??, I'd definitely book your wife on Spirit, especially for such a short flight.
