+ 1. Biz class seat ate my blackberry on a flight early August. Precisely the same way as the OP described.
Now when traveling in J - do the same thing as the Eagle Creek idea, only use the UA-supplied toiletry bag.
Also agree a non-issue when traveling in F. Plenty of arm-side bin space in legacy UA cabins.
