The moral of the story is; use the miles when you can. they can take them away due to a clerical error and will have no interest, of course, in correcting this.
my experience, anyway.
one thing they have lost, is any future money from me. i only use delta to burn remaining miles. i dont think they're losing much sleep .
I'm just not sure how this is possible. I told the guy look at my mileage balance on Jan. 1, look at my mileage balance now. Look at all the award flights i've taken this year, those ticketed and the amount of miles of earned from flights, UR transfers and Explorer credits and it should be plainly obvious I am short 55,000, but it seems they don't want to put in the effort. On hold now (at int'l rates) for my 5th or so lengthy call trying to get back what's mine. Perhaps i'll send UA my phone bill.
While I hate on United when they make a mistake...I will admit I was too hasty with this agent. After I fed him a detailed history and explained that the 55,000 and 47,500 were both charged for the same itinerary, he was able to talk to a supervisor, piece it all together and get the miles back in my account.
Still annoyed that it took three phone calls and over an hour to get the miles back, but at least they did right by me in the end. Definitely follow the advice suggested by others in this thread. After my first failed call I wrote down specific dates and #'s and then walked them through it that way, just expecting them to follow the narrative isn't likely.
Thanks (but also, a big screw you for the hassle) to UA.
