on a side note, I noticed that if my excess weight is 10 Kg then the excess baggage fee of $120 (12 per Kg) is more than upgrading to the next class of service. So can I buy one ticket at a higher class and then ask the agent to assign me a seat in lower class at the gate so that I can sit with my family?
This might sound counter intuitive but it does save me money.
Firstly, how do you plan to upgrade? It might be relevant - for example, with Air India's GetUpFront offer, you keep only the economy class baggage allowance.

If you are buying a paid Biz ticket but would like to sit in Y, I'm sure whoever is sitting in the seat you want would love a free upgrade
