If everybody who travels left an airline because there was an empty seat in first class and they were not upgraded, and changed car rental companies that had a full size on the lot and you got your economy instead, and hotels because they may or may not have had an executive room available and did not upgrade somebody, then there would be no travel business.
They could have had a dozen platinum diamonds checking in with giraffes and helicopters they were saving the rooms for if they did not sell them before they checked in. The gold benefit states
Upgrades may also include rooms with desirable views, corner rooms, rooms on high floors, rooms with special amenities, or rooms on Executive Floors, as identified by each property
At this hotel, apparently, they consider the better view an upgrade. If they OP didn't, they could have called and asked for their old room back.
