EK and EY both base their tier points on actual miles flown, which seems fairer to me.
As you say, I'll become Silver on BA from making a single TATL return, and then another TATL flight and a short AA domestic F.
If I could be bothered, I could easily achieve Gold by making a quick tour of the US in domestic F on AA. Would cost very little and be do-able in a couple of days. Not something I'm interested in, though.
To earn the same TPs in Europe would cost thousands.
