Based on the pre-arrival view of what had been allocated? I think I'd have called them to ask them to reconsider the room allocation.
More generally I agree it sounds like a poor categorisation of upgrade, and probably won't do the property any favours

. I also wonder sometimes if the FD staff automatically say 'we have upgraded you beacuse of your status level' even when they haven't: its hard to detect that upgrade sometimes
