Actually, the two methods are quite different. Steaming heats corn kernals from the outside in. Microwaving cooks from the inside out, if you will. The microwaves are absorbed by the liquids and sugars inside the kernals which in turn ‘excites’ them (on a molecular level) thus creating heat.
