Thanks for the information. As a general rule of thumb I thought Tuesday and weds would be the best days to travel but I was hoping there was some way to check how full a flight was before I booked. In the US I used how many seats were empty when I booked and when I did on line check in. I guess US carriers assign seats at booking and Qatar air doesn't and is the reason why seats still show up empty during on line check in?
I hate this fact as I have changed seats during online check in to sit next to what i thought was an open seat only to find someone seating in that seat and all other open seats taken.
I'm not sure as to what days are the best for flying or how the seat assignment works, but I have been able to select seats during booking every time I've flown with QR. I guess this is optional, and maybe people on average choose not to do it? However, on flights like DOH - BKK I've seen the cabin pretty much decked out during booking on several occasions (even when booking several months in advance).
Even though I always select seats during booking, I always ask if there is any exit row seats available at check-in (as they are usually not available to select in advance), and if I'm early, occasionally I've been able to secure some extra leg room when traveling in economy :-)
