I'm sure to get flamed for this, but what I have done in the past on relatively full flights where I want my wife & kids to travel is to waitlist myself too on the booking, and then cancel my own booking after everyone's waitlist clears. It's not guaranteed booking but it's the next best thing.
While that would work, I am not encouraging that. At a minimum, the member should rebook and accompany the family on part of the trip for good faith. I do not know if that will cause a blacklist on future waitlisting.
