Part of travelling is knowing how to travel. Most people who stay in upscale properties don't clean out the room when they leave. If there's something you want, why not ask? That way, you can make the decision rather than having to figure out whether the fact that the bed isn't bolted to the floor doesn't mean that they expect you to dismantle it and ship it home.
You're right, I was 20 in Venice and I asked to keep the hotel umbrella and the reply was a smiling yes.
You're right, it's important to ask but for this kind of minor things like a laundry bag I don't believe needed to ask (just my 5 cents, some people will agree and some will not).
Not sure if there are people who will ask if they can take the laundry bag ? they'll either take it or leave it but I'll be surprised if they ask. If an hotel employee is reading that, I'll be delighted to hear their views.
Out of 100 hotels : 0 hotel will charge for laundry bag (except the new RC Montreal, BTW the room is great, the view is bad and the service is not consistent. Big plus there : they have some great laundry bag
Out of 100 hotels : all hotels will charge if you pick up the bed. (not sure how)
Shoe bag : can you really clean a shoe bag after some shoes has been on it ?
