It doesn't surprise me that U.S. airline employees are sometimes confused...given that they've created some weird definitions of "domestic" and "international" for their own various purposes. But to not know that Hawaii is an actual state is pretty bad.
My mother lives in New Mexico. You would be surprised how many people ask me "Oh, is she an American citizen?".
And other folks from NM tell stories of driving in other states and being pulled over by cops who thought the car was from Mexico...not that that is reasonable cause anyhow...this is not just in distant states, but close ones like Texas and Colorado. There are some truly uneducated morons out there.
