To me it's a total no brainer, after two or three years it makes more sense to renew and get the double size book.
This is what MrWeezer did last year. His old passport was in bad shape showing its wear, down to 1/4 of one page for stamps (yes, one box) w about 2 years left before expiration. At the time I recall some advice that they try to talk you into a new one for added fees over adding pages. But as you say he got a newer & bigger one & is good with that. He had to re-pay the Chile reciprocity fee last August 2 years early but otherwise he's ok w the decision.

OP if you are considering a whole new passport, bring new photos.
