For a trip from USA to Asia, there's a $40 call center fee plus a $50(?) processing fee. But most people would say that $90 is worth it for an award to Asia. (As long as you don't need to make any changes, the change fee is irrelevant.)

Yes, you do have to call, but the availability should be the same, on Star Alliance airlines, as you would get from United. The economics end up working out in your favor, since 10k miles are easily worth $90.
