Question BA and FAA approved child restraint systems?

Today, I saw something I have never seen before in all my years flying on BA. It was an FAA approved child restraint system. Don't worry, it wasn't for me

Master traveller was seated directly in front of me and appeared to be quiet content with his BA issued colouring book and box of crayons.

Pretty nifty.

Now, let's review this device in situ, from my angle of sight..

The longer I stared at this strap, the more perturbed I became. Okay, there's a warning permanently adhered to strap containing stern words that death or serious injury may occur (for reasons presumably detailed in the micro print below) but besides the written warning, to me this harness had death trap written all over it. Just the action of unlatching the tray table and pivoting it into position with reasonable force would cause certain and unimaginable injury to the restrained child. Shudder the thought

Please tell me I'm wrong and these devices have a clever safety feature that would prevent such a thing from happening.

The story ended happily, with the young fella arriving safely and in good spirit. I did lay off the gin throughout the flight however
