Well thanks for everyone's comments.
I did go to the airport early and there was a huge line at check-in and if I had stayed in that line, I'm sure it would have been a much bigger hassle, but instead I went to executive side and got taken care of straight away. I told the agent I wanted to do a same day change and upgrade. He didn't know how to handle that, so I was sent immediately to a second agent who kindly and promptly took care of me. I made the same day change and was told I could check on the upgrade at the gate, but it was pretty sure that I would get the upgrade. I wandered around for a bit and happened to go to the counter just as the agent was printing out the upgrade boarding passes. I picked mine up and then went to the lounge for coffee and yogurt - and quiet - for about 20 or 30 minutes.
Came down to board through the fast lane and was seated alonge in 4A. Food was so-so, but at least it was better than coach, and the service was quite good. The flight was good. I felt like I could have easily flown for a couple of more hours that seats were that much more comfortable.
I had not flown advanced class on AC, but it was a good experience. I know the seats are much roomier, but the biggest difference is the quality of the cushioning. I don't understand why the seats aren't made more comfortable in the sense of the cushioning. It seems to me that the cost to improve that is very, very minimal and it would make the experience so much better. For me in coach, it isn't the room, which is tight and the other passengers, but the seats themselves. It is almost as though the seats are made to be uncomfortable. Maybe that's to promt passengers to upgrade.
Thanks again for all your suggests and comments. If I had more eUpgrade passes, I would put myself on permanent upgrade, but I have to pick and choose.
