QF still has options for 35 787-9s for delivery starting in 2016, at the same price as the canceled aircraft -- so basically QF is being paid USD 433 million to delay delivery by 2 years (Boeing can resell these early delivery slots for much more than the very low price that QF got as a launch customer). Very sweet deal for QF in so many ways.

"Qantas will receive $US433 million in ''contractual liquidated damages'' from Boeing after exercising its right to walk away from firm orders for 35 of the long-delayed 787-9 Dreamliners. Of the total payment, $US140 million will flow through to Qantas' bottom line in the first half."
