I really don't like what has happened at some of the smaller crossing spots, particularly on the Maine/Vermont/Upstate New York borders. You had communities that were effectively merged where they often have to drive miles to meet.

The worst example (and Customs is trying here) is Stanstead Quebec and Darby Line Vermont. You have across the street neighbors in different countries that literally have to drive a couple of miles, clear customs, and then drive back to say hello to the guy who has lived across the street from you for forty years.

Read about Canusa Blvd. Then there is the US enclaves in Canada.

Read about Vancouver, BC suburb of Point Roberts, Washington and Lake in the Woods Minnesota. I actually think that we should reach an agreement with Canada to maintain legal sovereignty over those lands but allow the land to administratively be on the Canadian side of the border. For anyone who has ever been to Geneva Switzerland, the Geneva Airport, Car Museum, and Convention Center are like that. It is part of France, but operates administratively as part of Switzerland.

Then there is this thoroughly commingled Dutch/Belgian City:

I don't even want to get started with the UAE/Omani border which makes this stuff look simple. They even have an exclave. An exclave is an enclave within an enclave. I used to live near an open border with Oman. It was weird and half the people carry a UAE and Omani cell phones to cope.
