I fail to understand why you think you should be upgraded by UA? If you are not using an upgrade instrument, why would any airline upgrade you?

On the other hand, if you used miles or SWU (when you get to 1K status) and still didnt clear the upgrade consistently, then it is likely time to discuss other airline options.
