I would think out of YUL you could do the same as YYZ, It has got to be a option on any flight so not sure if it has much value
YYZ is most certainly an option. The downside, on transboder flights for example, is cnx and US preclearance in YYZ which adds to hassle
and time. However, any cnx adds time. The eternal tradeoff; time vs miles! And when I have a bit of the latter I'll maxime the former! Like a YUL-YYZ-YVR-SFO/LAS...
In my particular situation with uncertain flying and likely time constraints, I chose a bird in hand... If I new that I would flying that extra segment or two, my choice would have been different.

Any advice?

I think the biggest unknown is what exactly the new benefits will be. I'll bet we'll start seeing a bunch more threads pop up questioning when they'll be announced... (shout out to ACTT!)
If I knew I'd be flying AC/UA enough, the 50% bonus is compelling. However, 35,000 @ 50% = 17,500 which is one CC signup bonus, so not hard to get otherwise. Now, SE's with 100% on 100k starts getting interesting...
If you think you're going to use up all the eUpgrades, then load up! Like xLuther mentioned, if you have reasonable certainty that you are able to chagne routing to maximize mileage, than 1500 SMs are not difficult to acheive over a couple of flights.
IMHO, I find the Bonus AE Miles (non SM) and the MLL membership discount to be useless.
I suspect, generally, the 25 eUgs are the first choice, then it becomes a toss-up between 50% bonus and more eUg credits. And for special cases, like myself (

), we can also pick SMs!
