OP note that if you invest in European airlines or even DL (to a large extent) there are high fees called fuel surcharges (YQ) when you redeem awards. Only US UA and AA (to a small extent) do not not charge YQ. However if you redeem the miles on domestic US itineraries there is no YQ.
