the 1500 status miles does not make sense for me, I just have endure a YYC stop to almost any trip to pick up an extra 1,000. Since I avoid YYC if I was hard up for miles near year end I can do that.

I would think out of YUL you could do the same as YYZ, It has got to be a option on any flight so not sure if it has much value
