I plan to re-check my luggage right after immigration/customs and leave IAH to visit a friend at downtown Houston in the mean time. My questions are:

1. Will United accept my luggage at IAH, given that my connecting flight is more than four hours out?

2. If I come back to IAH late for my original 7:15pm flight to AUS, can I quote the flat tire rule and standby for the next flight for free (there are at least two later flights for me)? What will happen to my luggage then?

Thanks!
1. In the pre-merger days, I have done that JFK a couple of years ago... UA agent didn't even blink.
2. IMO, your luggage is most likely to be put on the originally ticketed flight regardless of which flight you end up taking.
