Most if not all old configuration 738s (with economy back to row 28--note that it does not have 28 rows of economy, since economy doesn't start at row 1) are based at ORD. Therefore, if you book a flight that currently shows an old configuration 738, I'd give it a decent shot of staying that way.
Somewhat off topic but I wonder if THIS is why I hate flying 737s between ORD and So Cal, I thought it was just because the flight was longer and the seats were thinner. Now you're telling me the planes are older too?
