I suggested to Amex they refund me the extra 15k points at least, which she gladly did. Net result is I got my two tickets for a net of 15k points after all and still have the rather useless companion ticket available.
The companion ticket does sound like a good deal up front, but I struggled to find dates to use it. I also canceled my aeroplanplus amex, partly due to not being able to use this benefit.
