Probably a wise decision. Since Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's release, tourism has boomed, but they lack the facilities to handle it. There is a shortage of hotel rooms throught the country, so the price has been spiraling up out of control. There are some really amazing Buddhist temples, but not a lot else that is geared for tourists. Plus, the money situation is difficult as there are very few places to obtain kyat, with no credit cards/ATM's. You need a fistfull of brand new, unfolded USD to change at the airport (or in a dark alley to a stranger, as I had to do).
In a few years, there will be hotels, ATM's, iPhones, and McDONALD'S on every block. Personally, I fell in love with the fact that there were no international chains anywhere, but most people would not like it, without their Coke, Starbucks, and McD's fix. Fortunately for them (unfortunately for me), the embargo is just about over and the floodgates of Westernization will soon be unleashed.
