I was not charged, but a companion traveling with me (miles came out of a PLT's account) was charged. Apparently in some cases, changing between AA and a one-world carrier on the same route is not free -- I tried to protest it to the EXP desk agent without avail, and asked here and others told me they have been known to do that.
