Crew friends will often leave notes for the SCCM operating the flight highlighting their friend is on board and asking them to be 'taken care of'. It often helps if the crew member leaving the note has worked with the SCCM before and have a good rapport with them, but this is not always necessary as most crew like to look after each other.
Its not that uncommon for part of the flight briefing to be dedicated to todays 'Begging Letters'. More often than not the notes result in extra booze being given to the named individual, but it can also help if the SCCM at some point has to move people for one reason or another.
BA are quite strict about onboard upgrades now, as there was some abuse of the system.
Any cabin crew wanting to move a PAX up a class onboard, have to get the Captain to authorise the move.
