So I emailed United about it and I'm not so sure you are right. Here is what they said:
Unfortunately, it appears that we are reducing the service between Cleveland to Los Angeles as of January 8, 2013. There are several reasons for schedule changes, being the following - seasonal, operation frequency, flight re-timing, equipment substitution and flight number changes.
