sounds like your PNRs were split so you could go onto the first class waitlist. You can try to get you companion E+ access but it will take a phone call -- refered to the auto split PNR.
Thanks for the info! It's unfortunate that they've decided to make it an initiative thing -- but at least now I know.

Wow. Before, I used to be able to get United First upgrades for my husband AND me, as long as we were on the same reservation. Guess those days are gone!
