it is a manual process and you have to take the initiative to make the change.

not considered an upgrade, just an alternative seat selection in the same cabin

sounds like your PNRs were split so you could go onto the first class waitlist. You can try to get you companion E+ access but it will take a phone call -- refered to the auto split PNR.
