Not only do business people do it to save costs, many business flyer's top priortiy is to get home (regardless of cost) so if they can do it in a day trip they will pay extra.
Different strokes for different folks... When I travel on business, my preference is always to extend the trip. Being home is good, but nothing beats travelling.
For the OP, you may find it less costly to build a connection into your routing.
