YYZ-NRT-PEK - What if I miss my connection?
I've booked AP reward tickets for next spring that include an outbound leg consisting of YYZ-NRT on AC followed by NRT-PEK on ANA. I have a scheduled layover of 85 minutes at NRT before the NRT-PEK leg (17:20 departure), which, being the eternal pessimist, I am fearful of missing. Should the YYZ-NRT leg be delayed sufficiently for me to miss my NRT-PEK flight on ANA, will they put me on the only other Star Alliance flight out of NRT that evening, which happens to be an ANA code share operated by Air China departing at 19:00? There are actually four of us travelling together (but on two separately linked PNRs) so this really concerns four travellers, not just one!
Any suggestions how to best plan for a possible missed connection? What should we be be looking for as far as compensation goes should we have to overnight in Tokyo (all of us are travelling J class but have no status, if that makes a difference). Travelling the following morning wouldn't be the end of the world, but would cause us to miss a confirmed night at a hotel in PEK.
