Rio will have new thousand hotel rooms by the time of Cup and Olympics

An announcement was made regarding the establishment of two new hotel developments for Rio de Janeiro, the Marvelous City, which will add another thousand rooms to the city’s offer of hotel accommodation, in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

These new hotels are part of the Windsor hotel chain. Installed in Barra da Tijuca, an upmarket neighborhood in the West Zone of the city, these five-star hotel projects benefit from the Legislative Package for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ and 2016 Summer Olympic Games, launched last November, establishing tax breaks for the construction of new hotel rooms in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the City Hall, the developments will be sustainable, with refuse collection, reuse of Rainwater and also the filtering of water for internal use.

According to the Municipal Secretary for Tourism, Antonio Pedro Figueira, the city’s target is now to reach the figure of seven thousand new hotel rooms in time for the Summer Olympic Games, a figure which can rise as high as ten thousand. The city of Rio de Janeiro currently has about 29 thousand hotel rooms, and it is estimated that about 40 thousand hotel rooms will be needed for the Olympic Games, according to a request made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

City Mayor Eduardo Paes also believes that the target number of hotel rooms will be exceeded. “New hotels have been opened in the city, such as the Méridien on December 31st. The Glória Hotel should be ready in 2012 or 2013, and the Nacional Hotel is already closing a deal with some hotel chain (InterContinental hotels). This means that there is being a process of recovery of hotels that were closed, which is encouraging for the city, not only for the World Cup and the Summer Olympics, but also for the future of Rio de Janeiro.”

The forecast now is that at least one hotel of the Windsor chain will be ready in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ and both will be ready for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
