For better or worse, the luxury hotel scene in the most desirable neighborhoods (Leblon/Ipanema) will look much the same in 2016 as they do now. Leblon in particular is now the most expensive property market in the Americas, save only a few neighborhoods in Manhattan, and coupled with the absolute lack of undeveloped property and height restrictions on the beach, it is neither economically nor practically viable to build a major new hotel project -- if a developer can find the land it would be more lucrative to build condos or offices. As far as I know, there are no projects currently in development in Leblon -- most of the new hotel projects are in Zona Oeste (West) and not in very desirable locations for visitors in my opinion.
For many people seeking luxury accommodations in Leblon, apartment rentals might offer the best and most viable alternative to the Fasano -- but obviously makes for a different experience (in many ways better, but not any less expensive). This is where the VIPS will be staying for the World Cup, Olympics, etc.
