In the case I observed, it was the uniform of a regularly scheduled airline and the pilot was wearing his uniform, so I assume that it wasn't personal travel. He arrived at the hotel with a group (who seemed to know each other and to be making plans to leave for the airport together the next day) of other uniformed crew members from the same airline, which was a traditional USA-based legacy carrier.
